Slated for production in December, That Friend centers on Paul (Guillén), that one friend we all have whose invitation for “one drink” seems harmless but the next thing you know, you’re drunk on a Tuesday, swaying in your kitchen eating dry top ramen out of the bag and wishing you hadn’t just sent that text. Brener’s character Henry is just trying to have a romantic weekend in Palm Springs with his new girlfriend Penny until Paul crashes their trip. And when Paul’s pack of drug-laced cigarettes disappear into the hands of a stranger, the night really takes a turn.
Ryan Tillotson and the L.A.-based Straw Hut Media will produce the pic alongside Guillén.
Best known for his role as Nelson “Big Head” Bighetti on HBO’s Emmy-winning comedy Silicon Valley, Brener has also put in memorable turns on series like Mythic Quest, The Last of Us and 3 Body Problem, among others. Notable feature credits include Bill Burr’s comedy Old Dads, Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie, What Men Want, Jason Reitman’s The Front Runner, and The Belko Experiment.
Up next, Brener will be seen in Reitman’s anticipated Sony pic Saturday Night, charting the lead-up to SNL‘s first broadcast, as well as Netflix’s action thriller Carry On from Jaume Collet-Serra. The thesp is repped by CAA and Artists First.
