Josh McLaughlin Named President Of Jake Gyllenhaal’s Nine Stories Productions
Jake Gyllenhaal’s Nine Stories Productions has appointed Josh McLaughlin to serve as the company’s new President.
McLaughlin joins from his own production company, Wink Pictures, where he curated a diverse slate of films, television shows and podcasts over the course of five-plus years. In his new role, he’ll look to drive the growth of Nine Stories following a number of big successes for the company. These include a pair of projects starring Gyllenhaal: Amazon MGM Studios’ remake of Road House, which broke records with over 50 million worldwide viewers on Prime Video its first two weekends, becoming the studio’s most-watched debut ever, and Apple TV+’s Presumed Innocent, the platform’s most-viewed drama, which was recently renewed for a second season with Gyllenhaal once again exec producing for Nine Stories.

As he works alongside Gyllenhaal to build out Nine Stories’ slate, McLaughlin will look to help the company expand into a creative hub for filmmakers and a home for beloved IP.

Before establishing Wink Pictures, McLaughlin spent 10 years at Focus Features, eventually rising to President of Production, where he was involved in an array of films including Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman, Kasi Lemmons’ Harriet, Joe Wright’s Darkest Hour, and Paul Thomas Anderson’s Phantom Thread. Other notable filmmakers with whom he collaborated there included David Leitch on the Charlize Theron starrer Atomic Blonde and Joel Edgerton on Boy Erased. As an executive producer, he was behind Let Him Go, a neo-Western thriller starring Kevin Costner and Diane Lane.
Prior to his time at Focus Features, McLaughlin held executive roles at Chernin Entertainment and The Mark Gordon Company.
An Oscar and Tony-nominated actor, Gyllenhaal co-founded the fully capitalized production company Nine Stories in 2015. Past features from the company include Antoine Fuqua’s The Guilty, starring Gyllenhaal, which was Netflix’s #1 film for over three weeks; Paul Dano’s directorial debut Wildlife, starring Carey Mulligan; David Gordon Green’s Stronger, starring Gyllenhaal as Boston Marathon bombing survivor Jeff Bauman; Antonio Campos’ The Devil All the Time for Netflix; Reinaldo Marcus Green’s Joe Bell; Tate Taylor’s Breaking News in Yuba County; and Hondros, a documentary on war photographer Chris Hondros, which won the Audience Award at the Tribeca Festival.
Recently closing a three-year, first-look film deal with Amazon MGM Studios, which includes theatrical, as well as streaming releases, Nine Stories’s stage credits include We’re Only Alive for a Short Amount of Time by playwright David Cale, as well as Sea Wall/A Life and Jeremy O. Harris’ Slave Play, which were nominated for the Tony Award for Best Play in the same year.
