Journey into a mine at Adventureland Park when it reopens the Underground roller coaster
Adventureland Resort in Altoona is gearing up for its 50-year milestone in 2024 with the reopening of its fully enclosed wooden coaster the Underground.
What is the Underground?
Underground is an indoor wooden roller coaster where riders will get whisked through an abandoned mine in a quest to find outlaw Bad Bob and his crew as they hide out there with stolen gold, according to a news release from Adventureland.
When was the Underground built?
The Underground was built by the now-defunct Custom Coasters International in 1996. The Des Moines Register reported that the new coaster’s price tag was $1.5 million.
What changes are being made to the Underground?
The roller coaster’s track and train will be refurbished, and the train was sent to Philadelphia Toboggan Coasters in Pennsylvania to receive a full rebuild. Philadelphia Toboggan Coasters is a roller coaster manufacturing company that maintains the “largest wooden coaster parts inventory in the world,” according to the company. New technology and effects will be added to the ride. When it opened, the Underground featured animation, special lighting and sound effects as riders were taken through dark mine shafts, the Register reported in 1996.
