JT Reaffirms Her Support For The Transgender Community: “They The Girls”
JT had no ill intent when declaring she’s “pretty like a transgender” on her solo record, “No Bars.”
The City Girls member was recently asked about the lyric and told Billboard, “I feel like transgenders are so pretty. They always fixed, they look good. I know a few personally. I call them all the time [and] ask them for, you know, little tricks and trades. They the girls.”
When the song first dropped, amid backlash, the 30-year-old told Genius, “I just wanted to give transgender women their flowers. Like they titties be sittin’ up. Their face are beautiful. The makeup ideas and how hard they go for their beauty, you know? I love it.”
Fans were split on how to feel about JT’s “No Bars” and even her recent commentary on the commentary towards the transgender community.
One fan tweeted, “Ohhhhhh she actually refers to trans people as ‘transgenders.’ I thought that was just a goofy lil one liner…”
Another person felt JT’s answer was “commercialized.”
They tweeted, “I just feel like this is such a commercialized response. ‘Transgenders’ who exactly are you speaking about here? ‘Women who are trans..’ would be the better language to use. Idk — something about this just be feeling so disingenuous — cis women like this care more about how they ‘benefit’ from trans women than the actual livelihoods of ‘the girls’ they’re intrigued by but let me go.”
Someone, instead, jumped to JT’s defense, tweeting, “I feel like cishet ppl calling trans ppl ‘transgenders’ is the same thing as nonblack ppl calling black ppl ‘blacks.'”
Trans popstar Kim Petras was featured on the duo’s lead single, “Flashy,” from their latest album, RAW. Of that collaboration, JT shared, “We were looking for somebody who was going to sound good on the record. And Kim Petras, I think that she’s dope and she sounds great.”
