Juicy J Concerned About Hip-Hop Sales Declining By 40%, Calls For Meeting
Hip-Hop was proudly boasted as the biggest genre in the world for years, but 2023 hasn’t yielded the same success. Juicy J recently spoke on rap sales declining 40% and believes that the Hip-Hop community needs to come together for a meeting.
“I know a lot of people don’t want to hear this, but I’m being real. Rap music is down 40%,” the Three 6 Mafia member said in a video. “Check the charts. Check the math. I don’t make the rules. What are we, as rappers, producers, composers, going to do about this sh*t? Because it’s down 40% this year. Check the charts. Do your research. This is a fact.”
While the Mental Trillness rapper was asking listeners what they were going to do, he had his own suggestion. “Let’s have a conversation […] We gotta figure some sh*t out. We gotta sit down and talk. Let’s have a meeting, let’s meet up somewhere and have a big-a** f**king meeting.” Check out his video below.
The decline of Hip-Hop became a major talking point this past June when statistics showed that no Hip-Hop albums or songs topped the Billboard 200 or Billboard Hot 100, respectively. That changed at the end of that month with Lil Uzi Vert’s Pink Tape, followed by Travis Scott’s July album Utopia and Rod Wave’s September LP Nostalgia. This still pales in comparison to 2022, where six different Hip-Hop albums claimed the No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200 by June of that year.
As for the Hot 100, Latto became the first rapper to reach No. 1 on the chart thanks to her feature alongside BTS member Jung Kook with their July collaboration, “Seven.” Doja Cat became the first rapper to reach the mountaintop with her August Hip-Hop record “Paint The Town Red,” and then Drake and SZA’s ballad “Slime You Out” followed suit. These three tracks didn’t gain much staying power though, as they all stood at No. 1 for a combined five weeks.
