Julia Louis-Dreyfus's half sister Emma dies at 44 from apparent overdose
Julia Louis-Dreyfus has lost her younger sister.
Emma Louis-Dreyfus, who shared a father with the Veep star, died after she had a seizure on Aug. 13 while camping with several other people in Nevada County, Calif., according to DailyMailTV. Chief Deputy Coroner Mike Sullivan told Nevada County’s Union newspaper on Sept. 11 that Emma Louis-Dreyfus’s death was accidental and caused by combined cocaine and ethanol intoxication.
Emma Louis-Dreyfus was 44. Like Julia Louis-Dreyfus, she spent her younger years in New York City. In 1998, Emma moved to the San Francisco Bay Area, where she was a clinical social worker. Her obituary in the San Francisco Chronicle notes that she was a “brilliant, progressive thinker and supporter of social justice,” “an ardent animal lover,” and “adored children, especially her niece and nephews.” The nephews include the Seinfeld alum’s two adult sons with writer and producer Brad Hall: Charles, 26, and Henry, 21.
Julia’s representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
In 2016, Julia, 57, dedicated the Emmy she won for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy — her fifth Emmy overall — to her father, William Louis-Dreyfus, just days after he died, at that year’s ceremony on Sept. 18.
Over the past few weeks, Julia has kept her social media posts focused on politics, encouraging people to register to vote, and on gratitude. One year after announcing that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer, she was “grateful to be alive.”
She’s also given peeks at her Veep family, as the cast members film the show’s upcoming seventh and final season, which had been delayed while she underwent treatment.
