Julie Chen's 'defiant' support of Les Moonves on 'Big Brother' doesn't sit well on Twitter: 'She just disrespected all the women her husband abused'
Julie Chen’s not-so-subtle support of her husband and, until a few days ago, boss Les Moonves as she signed off Thursday’s Big Brother episode has been described as “defiant” and “awkward.” And those are the nice words.
Many folks on social media were less restrained — no big surprise — and the TV personality, who has been on a hiatus from The Talk since Moonves was fired by CBS amid allegations of sexual misconduct spanning decades, was ripped apart for staring into the camera and signing off as “Julie Chen Moonves.” Director Judd Apatow found Chen’s statement to be “cruel to the many victims” and suggested that Chen is “damaged” and not thinking straight. Actress and #MeToo advocate Rosanna Arquette wrote that she had “felt sorry” for Chen and the couple’s young son but said that her response to the situation “is not OK.” Some called for CBS to axe her from the show, while others implored her to just “go away.”
Some of the reactions:
Her husband threatened people and ruined careers. He sexually assaulted and harassed people. To stand by him at this moment is cruel to the many victims. Maybe the shock and fear of her husband has damaged her and she isn’t seeing clearly— yet. https://t.co/M18m7sGhs7

They have the the opportunity here to get real help for him and then help other predators get help .what a shame.

At first I felt sorry for her and her child. But this is not ok.

I'm all about women like Julie Chen owning their careers & not being diminished in any way by their husband's unfortunate deeds. It's about him not them. But JC has now made it about him, & IMO that's unwise. I read the testimony of Moonves accusers. I believe them & support them https://t.co/SX8WkJ9Shv

Julie Chen signing off as Julie Chen Moonves is like doubling down in blackjack when your two cards are a deuce and the Official Rules

Well, Julie Chen-Moonves owes other women, such as Camille Cosby, a huge apology for the criticism she gave her standing by her husband. #TheView She is a hypocrite now that the tables have turned on her. pic.twitter.com/0jE91Rn2ec

@CBSTVStudios Please fire Julie Chen…..MOONVES. She just disrespected all the women that her husband abused. Supporting your husband is one thing, but being so blatant about it is just wrong.

@JulieChen #JulieChen is what complicity looks like. I can only hope she loses her platform to stop further traumatizing #victims of #SexualViolence At the hands of #LesMoonves and other #Predators like him. @TheTalkCBS @CBS Enough. Put me in coach. #metoo https://t.co/AjhxSmwvii

The Talk’s rival show, ABC’s The View, seemed to report on Chen’s name change with added delight. Joy Behar said that, with Chen standing by her man, she will probably have to give her the moderator job on her daytime show. “They can’t talk about anything that’s related to relationships,” including the #MeToo movement, “unless Julie Chen Moonves comes clean.”
CHEN RETURNS TO 'BIG BROTHER': The host signed off last night's show as Julie Chen Moonves, which was her first time on TV since her husband Les Moonves resigned as CEO of CBS for sexual misconduct allegations. CBS is currently conducting an investigation into the Moonves allegations. As it stands, he could still earn a hefty payout. The #TimesUp organization is asking for it all to be donated to groups fighting sexual harassment.
