First look at Universal's 'Jurassic World: The Ride' includes terrifying Mosasaurus attack

The gates of Jurassic Park: The Ride at Universal Studios Hollywood will reopen this summer — but this time, visitors can expect a whole new Jurassic world. The rebranded and upgraded Jurassic World: The Ride will replace Universal's original dino attraction, which opened in June 1996 and closed last September. In the new commercial, which premiered today, a Tyrannosaurus rex crashes into Universal Studios, sending films crews and costumed actors (including some recognizable Universal characters like the Mummy) running for the Hollywood Hills. There's also a very brief clip of the ride itself, in which the aquatic predator Mosasaurus gives visitors a scare. Watch the ad above, then read on to find out exactly what's in store for Jurassic World riders.

The upgrade begins from the moment visitors enter, with a "contemporary redesign of the iconic Jurassic World gates, illuminated with billowing flames." From there, riders board rafts and float along a peaceful jungle river, gazing at herbivores like Stegosaurus and Parasaurolophus, and presumably doing their best Jeff Goldblum impressions. (The riders, not the dinosaurs.) This being Jurassic World, things quickly turn chaotic, with predatory Velociraptors and Dilophosauruses wreaking havoc and threatening visitors. This was the dark portion of the original ride; the press release is unclear as to whether they'll turn the lights on. The climactic reveal of the Tyrannosaurus has been promoted to a full-on T.rex versus Indominus Rex battle, which takes place just before the rafts plunge down an 84-foot waterfall.

Somewhere in there, visitors come face-to-face with the giant, whale-like Mosasaurus, who threatens to break the glass of what Universal Studios describes as "a 3 million gallon glass-encased Aquarium Observatory tank." (Maybe it's just hangry. Is Universal Studios feeding it enough pterosaurs?)

Along with the renovated ride, the park is introducing a "Raptor Encounter" attraction where guests can come face-to-face with Chris Pratt's Velociraptor bestie Blue, and a "Dino Play" area where kids can excavate giant fossils.

No specific date has been announced for the ride opening this summer, but more info can be found at UniversalStudiosHollywood.com.
