Justin Bieber has been one of the biggest celebrities on the planet since he was 13 years old. He's grown up with the tabloids and celebrity media meticulously tracking every detail of his life—both the highs and the lows. In a lengthy Instagram post, Bieber reached out to his fans to be transparent about his own struggles with mental health, substance abuse, and fame for more than 10 years.

The note to fans, shared on Labor Day, begins with Bieber sympathizing with those who struggle with mental health on a daily basis, noting that “it’s hard to get out of bed in the morning when you are overwhelmed with your life.”

The singer then dives into the complications that come along when a child is forced into the rigor of celebrity status—including the massive praise he received at the start of his career, and the downfall that was riddled with a plethora of bad habits.

“I started doing pretty heavy drugs at 19 and abused all my relationships. I became resentful, disrespectful to women, and angry. I became distant to everyone who loved me, and I was hiding behind a shell of a person that I had become.”

Bieber also noted that with everyone else in his life making decisions for him, he was essentially an undeveloped child with all the money in the world. In the past few years, the singer credits his lifestyle turnaround to a couple different factors, including God and his 2018 marriage to Hailey Baldwin-Bieber, which he calls “the best season of his life.”
