Justin Bieber and Patrick Schwarzenegger's friendship finds its way to the red carpet
While the world sees a lot of Justin Bieber, believe it or not, it’s rare that he’s on the red carpet. But that’s where he was on Thursday night in support of his good friend Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Yahoo Entertainment was at the Midnight Sun premiere at the ArcLight Hollywood multiplex when the “Purpose” singer strode by in his best sweatpants — black with yellow stripes — and a black sweatshirt with “‘Fear of God” printed across its back. As he arrived via a back entrance — sorry, Beliebers! — and posed for a few snapshots with Schwarzenegger, he didn’t take questions, but we got to see his famous smirky smile as he walked by surrounded by his entourage.
If our research is right (it’s Friday, and we’re tired, so it could be wrong), Bieber hasn’t been on a real red carpet since the 2016 Grammys. He has been at events — including the recent NBA All-Star Celebrity Game, Hand in Hand: A Benefit for Hurricane Relief, and a pre-Grammys party in 2017 — but not on a true red carpet. Seeing as he’s in the middle of relationship drama with Selena Gomez, his appearance means he must like Schwarzenegger an awful lot.
While it seems like they’re pretty different fellas, they’ve been palling around for at least the last year. That was when Patrick channeled his dad Arnold’s inner strength and carried Bieber down a New York City street. While they were in the area, they also made a trip to the Hamptons.
Their other sightings were less exciting for sure. Oh, they’ve done dinner in L.A. a few times, and once Patrick was seen driving Bieber’s G-Wagon. And yes, they’ve popped up on each other’s social too. Bieber once captured Patrick and his girlfriend, Abby Champion, having a thumb war aboard a private plane. (In case you were wondering what the rich and famous do while traveling.)
Schwarzenegger tells Yahoo he was happy to “have a lot of great friends” at the event last night. He elaborated a little more about Bieber specifically to Entertainment Tonight, saying, “He’s such a great guy. I’m just really blessed to call him a friend, he’s a really great guy… I’m really happy he came to support me and I’ll support him throughout his life.”
Bieber wasn’t the only one who showed up for Patrick, who also tells us that just because he’s doing a drama doesn’t mean he’s against doing action films like his father. “No, I’m not saying that,” he says, smiling. “This right now is a very heartfelt, coming-of-age, romantic love story, but it doesn’t mean I won’t be in an action movie next. The last thing I did was a mini-series for National Geographic called the Long Road Home and I played a soldier… That was pretty much the complete opposite of this love story.”
Mama Maria Shriver was beaming with pride. When we ask what it’s like seeing her baby on the big screen, her response: “It’s different, it’s definitely different.” The journalist adds, “I’m super proud of him. Superexcited for him.” As if on cue, he walks by just at that moment, and she gushes, “Look how handsome he is!”
As for where dad Arnold was? While he was out for a bike ride with his son Joseph Baena on Wednesday, he missed Patrick’s premiere because he was traveling to Australia for Arnold Sports Festival Australia.
