Justin Chambers 'very excited' for life after 'Grey's Anatomy'
Justin Chambers is ready for life after Grey's Anatomy.
Last week, it was announced Chambers — who plays fan-favorite Dr. Alex Karev on the medical drama — was departing the show after 15 years. Page Six caught up with the actor who said it was an emotional decision to leave Grey's.
"Of course, anywhere that you spend 15 years, it’s a big chunk of your life," he explained.
Chambers, an original cast member, noted that he's "very excited" for the next chapter. While he said he's taking things "one day at a time," The Wedding Planner star revealed he hopes to get into producing documentaries in the future. Chambers added that he’s looking forward to "life, family, love and friendship."
Last week, Page Six reported Chambers was addressing mental health issues at a facility in Connecticut. When asked if the report was true he replied, "Maybe." He changed the topic back to the ABC show adding, "Anyways, Grey’s has been very supportive of me and I’m very grateful and it’s been a great ride."
A source claimed to Page Six that Chambers was at a facility for "for stress and life coaching." A second insider confirmed the report to the outlet but alluded to drama on set being a contributing factor. "Justin was at Privé-Swiss being treated for stress, depression and life-coaching. There is a lot going on with [Grey’s Anatomy] behind-the-scenes right now," the second source claimed.
Chambers has opened up about his health before. In 2008, the actor voluntarily checked himself into Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital at UCLA to be treated for sleep deprivation.
"I suffer from a biological sleep disorder. Your body is tired but your mind keeps racing," Chambers told People, explaining he went "two months without really sleeping."
"This was the first time I checked in to get help," he added. "I have usually ridden it out."
Chambers confirmed his exit from Grey's Anatomy in a statement.
"There's no good time to say goodbye to a show and character that's defined so much of my life for the past 15 years. For some time now, however, I have hoped to diversify my acting roles and career choices. And, as I turn 50 and am blessed with my remarkable, supportive wife and five wonderful children, now is that time," he said.
"As I move on from Grey's Anatomy, I want to thank the ABC family, Shonda Rimes, original cast members Ellen Pompeo, Chandra Wilson and James Pickens, and the rest of the amazing cast and crew, both past and present, and, of course, the fans for an extraordinary ride," he concluded.
