Justin Timberlake’s alleged reaction to Britney Spears’ upcoming memoir suddenly makes a lot of sense now that an excerpt from the book has been released by People.

In her book The Woman in Me, which will be released on October 20, Spears, 41, reveals that when she was dating Timberlake, she became pregnant with his baby but had an abortion. The couple began dating when they were 19 years old in 1999 until 2002.

Her brave revelation comes after reports claimed Timberlake, 42, was “concerned” about what the “Toxic” singer planned to discuss in her memoir. “Justin’s not going to be happy,” a source told Us Weekly, claiming that the book “goes after him hard.” Meanwhile a second insider explained that “it’s not Britney’s intention to skewer anyone,” she is trying “to relay the facts from her perspective.”

In the newly-released excerpt, Spears writes that Timberlake didn’t want her to continue the pregnancy due to concerns that the couple were not ready to be parents.

“It was a surprise, but for me, it wasn’t a tragedy. I loved Justin so much. I always expected us to have a family together one day. This would just be much earlier than I’d anticipated,” Spears writes. “But Justin definitely wasn’t happy about the pregnancy. He said we weren’t ready to have a baby in our lives, that we were way too young.”

“If it had been left up to me alone, I never would have done it. And yet Justin was so sure that he didn’t want to be a father.” She adds: “To this day, it’s one of the most agonizing things I have ever experienced in my life.”

After splitting from Timberlake, Spears went on to become a mother during her marriage to Kevin Federline, welcoming two sons — Sean Preston, 18, and Jayden James, 17. With his wife, Jessica Biel, Timberlake also shares two boys — Silas, 8, and Phineas, 2.

In recent years, Timberlake has faced pressure to answer for his actions in the aftermath of his split from Spears. Amid calls from fans to end the pop icon’s controversial conservatorship, which was ceased in 2021, fans partially blamed Timberlake for contributing to the intense media scrutiny that led to Spears’ 2007 mental health crisis.

After Framing Britney Spears, a New York Times documentary that suggested Timberlake had helped turn the world against Spears by insinuating that she cheated on him in his song “Cry Me A River,” the singer apologized to his ex in a public statement.

“I am deeply sorry for the times in my life where my actions contributed to the problem, where I spoke out of turn, or did not speak up for what was right,” he wrote on Instagram at the time, naming Spears in his apology.
