Kamaiyah Arrested In Connecticut For “Headgear” Offense
By Lola Jacobs
Oakland-based rapper Kamaiyah was arrested at Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks, Conn., according to CNN. Officials reported that she became “aggressive” when she was asked to remove her “headgear,” which she said was a bonnet.
The 26-year-old was reportedly asked to remove her hair cover after it set off an alarm at a security checkpoint. She was told that she would not be able to fly unless she did as TSA asked. According to a report from state police, Kamaiyah used “vulgar language” and was “aggressive with her language and posture.” She is said to have resisted arrest when they attempted to take her into custody. She’s being charged with interfering with police and second-degree breach of peace.
The Before I Wake rapper went to Twitter to write a string of now-deleted tweets. One tweet read, “I’m never going to Hartford Connecticut again I had to bail out of jail for wearing a bonnet in their airport that showed me enough about what type of place it is.”
Her mugshot features the 2017 XXL Freshman Class member with visibly wet and irritated eyes as if she’d been crying. From the one tweet we can recall, she may have thought it a cultural offense.
This comes amid a very successful year for Kamaiayah. Her Coachella performance was memorable and she was featured on Paper’s “Rising Artists You Can’t Miss” list. Her bond was posted at $5,000. She’s expected in court on June 6.
