What did Kamala Harris say about coconut trees?
In a May 2023 speech to swear in new members of the President’s Advisory Commission on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence, and Economic Opportunity for Hispanics, Harris shared an anecdote about a phrase her mother used when she was growing up.
"None of us just live in a silo. Everything is in context," Harris said. "My mother used to —she would give us a hard time sometimes, and she would say to us, 'I don't know what's wrong with you young people. You think you just fell out of a coconut tree?' You exist in the context of all in which you live and what came before you."

While on its face it seems silly, it actually made a lot of sense in—wait for it!—context.
Harris was speaking about the importance of context in delivering equity in education. She explained in part, "It's not just simply about financial resources; that is a very big part of it. But it’s also about: What is the culture of the environment? How are we approaching this issue in a way that we also understand we cannot support and help our young people if we don't also look at the context in which those young people live and are being raised? Which means necessarily, because our edict and our mission is not to come out and say, 'Well, we could do this better.'"

the thing about the “you think you just fell out of a coconut tree? you exist in the context of all in which you live and what came before you” kamala line is that she’s actually 100% correct and it’s the furthest thing from a nonsensical phrase she’s ever said
