Kamala Harris Means Business in Navy Blue Suit With Irene Neuwirth Pearls for Houston Campaign Rally

Kamala Harris continued her power suiting streak during her recent campaign event in Houston on Wednesday. The vice president and Democratic presidential candidate spoke at the Sigma Gamma Rho’s 60th International Biennial Boule.

For the occasion, Harris showed she meant business in a dark navy suit with complementary blouse in a variation of black. The vice president’s suit featured a blazer with sharp lapels and tailored trousers. She wore an American flag pin on her lapel.

Among other pieces Harris added to her look for accessories, the vice president wore a pearl necklace by Irene Neuwirth and pearl earrings. Pearls are a signature piece of Harris’s wardrobe. She regularly wears them for such significant occasions — including campaign rallies and events.

Harris’ pearls, however, come with greater significance, especially for events with a sorority or fraternity affiliation. While attending Howard University in the 1980s, Harris became a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority.

The Greek life organization’s history includes founders known as the 20 pearls. In the decades since her time at Howard University, Harris has worn pearls as a reminder of the organization’s importance. She recently attended an Alpha Kappa Alpha event on July 10 in Dallas, where she not only wore her signature pearls, but also wore a salmon pink power suit inspired by the colors of the sorority.

Since announcing her campaign for president, Harris has used certain sartorial statements to send a message. On Tuesday, the vice president wore a blue suit, which complemented the looks of attendees Megan Thee Stallion and Stacey Abrams, as a way to highlight the blue wave of the Democratic party.
