Kamala Harris’ Stepdaughter Ella Emhoff Wears Viral Camo ‘Harris Walz’ Hat in Monochromatic Helmut Lang Look at Democratic National Convention 2024
Ella Emhoff, the stepdaughter of Vice President Kamala Harris, took on monochromatic dressing for the first night of the 2024 Democratic National Convention on Monday in Chicago. The fashion model and knitwear designer wore a beige sleeveless top with a cowl neck silhouette featuring a sheer scarf paired with matching linen pleated pants by Helmut Lang. For a whimsical touch, she accessorized her look with the viral camo print Harris-Walz hat.
The hat, manufactured by Unionwear, was inspired by rising pop star Chappell Roan, who has her own version of the camo hat with the words “Midwest Princess” available on her official website. The item sold out a few hours after its release on Aug. 5 and went viral on social media.

“We’ve been in business for 32 years. We never had an instance where we made a sample in the morning and then they had sold a million dollars’ worth of hats by the next morning,” Mitch Cahn, the president and founder of Unionwear, previously told WWD.
The sales helped the fundraising committee supporting Harris’ presidential campaign and Democrats nationwide.
Emhoff is the daughter of U.S. Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff and film producer Kerstin Emhoff. Her parents divorced in 2008 and her father married Kamala Harris in 2014.
In January 2021, after wearing Miu Miu at Joe Biden’s presidential inauguration, Ella Emhoff grabbed the fashion world’s attention. One month later, she signed with IMG Models Worldwide, the same agency that works with Gigi Hadid and Bella Hadid. Since then, Emhoff has modeled for Balenciaga and Adidas by Stella McCartney, and walked the runway for Miu Miu and Proenza.
A graduate of Parsons School of Design, Emhoff founded Soft Hands, a company dedicated to fashion, design and creative consulting. She also created a knit club to teach the art of knitting and often shares knit paintings on her Instagram account.
Kamala Harris kicked off the Democratic National Convention on Monday. Approximately 5,000 delegates are expected to attend the four-day event, with guests including former U.S. Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama. Joe Biden and his wife joined Hillary Clinton, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, Rep. James E. Clyburn, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, New York Governor Kathy Hochul and more as speakers on the convention’s first night.
