Kanye West Brought His Sunday Service Concert Back Home to Chicago
Kanye West’s Sunday Service concerts used to be star-studded, invitation-only affairs held at secret locations and with color-themed dress codes. But these days, he’s making the gospel concert series more and more accessible to the public. First, he brought the show to Coachella in April. Then, in the wake of the recent mass shooting in Dayton, Ohio, West took his Sunday Service show to that city. Last week, the concert hit Los Angeles, where Brad Pitt was spotted in the crowd, and this Sunday, West brought the show to his hometown of Chicago.
The event was held at the city’s Northerly Island, and while ticketed, it was free and open to the public. (The tickets, predictably, were snatched up in less than an hour after they were made available on TicketMaster.) Fans began lining up for entry to the Sunday morning concert late Saturday night.
The show’s set list included a mix of gospel songs, Christian covers of pop tunes like Nelly Furtado’s "I’m Like a Bird," and Kanye’s own hits, including "Jesus Walks," "Father Stretch My Hands," and "Ultralight Beam."
West was joined in the concert by fellow famed Windy City musician Chance the Rapper, who performed his verse from "Ultralight Beam." The concert streamed live online and was broadcast over local radio, but anyone who missed the show can still watch the whole thing on the Sunday Service website. Kanye’s faith-themed upcoming album, Jesus is King, is due to be released on September 27th. There’s still no word yet on Yandhi, though.
