At the end of Chandu Champion, Murlikant Petkar achieved a monumental victory by setting a new world record and winning a gold medal at the Paralympics. Why did Murli leave his village?
The story opens in the year 1952 in the village of Karad where villagers were abuzz with excitement, celebrating K.D. Jadhav’s historic Olympic victory. Young Murlikant, accompanied by his elder brother, witnessed the joyous scene. Inspired by Jadhav’s achievement, Murli made a decision: he would win a gold medal for India.
However, Murli’s dreams faced immediate resistance from his father, who insisted that education was the only path to a respectable life. He dismissed Murli’s aspirations as foolish, wanting him to focus on his studies instead. The villagers, too, mocked Murli’s ambitions. Despite this, Murli’s brother remained supportive, enrolling him in a local wrestling arena where he began his training at a young age.
As Murli grew older, his determination never wavered. One day, a wrestling competition was organized in the village, pitting Murli against the son of the village Sarpanch. Initially, the Sarpanch’s son dominated the match, but in a surprising turn of events, Murli managed to defeat him. This victory, however, incited the wrath of the Sarpanch, and the villagers infuriated, chased after Murli. In a desperate bid to escape, Murli boarded a train bound for Poona.
On the train, Murli met Karnail, a beginner boxer who shared his knowledge of the sport with Murli. Soon, Karnail became Murli’s best friend. Together, they joined the Indian army, where Murli received formal training in boxing. He channeled all his energy into the sport, determined to prove himself on the world stage.
After years of relentless training, Murli finally earned the opportunity to represent India in the International Military Games in Tokyo. With his coach and fellow soldiers by his side, Murli traveled to Tokyo with high hopes. He excelled in the early rounds, defeating formidable opponents.
Did Petkar win gold in the Summer Paralympics?
However, on the eve of the finals, Murli’s focus wavered. He was invited to an interview on national television, eager to enjoy his newfound fame before the big match. This decision proved costly, as it left him with little time to analyze his opponent’s strengths and weaknesses. Overconfident and underprepared, Murli entered the ring the next day and suffered a devastating defeat. This incident shattered Murli’s dream of winning the gold medal that year.
In 1965, during the Indo-Pakistani War, Murlikant Petkar suffered severe injuries that left him in a coma for several years. Upon regaining consciousness, he discovered that his lower body was paralyzed, making it impossible for him to walk without assistance. This life-altering injury plunged Murli into deep despair, leading him to contemplate suicide. However, fate had other plans.
