Katy Perry can't wait to join world of working moms: It’s 'a very strong force'
Katy Perry’s baby news is out, via a bumpy reveal in her new video for "Never Worn White," and now she’s talking all about her pregnancy, which she says was very much planned — thank you very much.
In an interview Thursday with SiriusXM’s Mikey Piff, the singer said, “This song is not the lead single off of my next record,” which will be out this summer, around the time her baby with fiancé Orlando Bloom is due, “but honestly I was getting way too fat to hide it. So I said, ‘Well, I think this song would be a great reveal.’”
Perry said dropping the news in her video was natural, explaining, “That’s the way I communicate things — I communicate through music — so I think what better way to do that.”
As for getting pregnant ahead of her wedding with Bloom, the American Idol judge said, “Well, it wasn’t on accident... I’m so grateful for everything that I have been able to do and achieve — and all the goals I’ve been able to kind of check off my list... I’ve just been trying to create this space in my own life where I’m not running myself too ragged ... for something new to happen like this. I think we’re both looking forward to this new interval of life and sharing this.”
Perry said with the arrival of this baby, she’s looking forward to joining the ranks of working moms.
“I’m sure it will be an untraditional way but, look, I’m joining the force of working moms out there,” she said, “and that is a very strong force. I love what I do and it doesn’t feel like work and it brings me so much joy, so I want to continue that state of joy.”
Perry also talked about doing private pregnancy reveals for family and close friends by having custom wine labels made with the news, which they then gifted to loved ones and waited until they noticed the label. But her mother, Mary Perry, beat her to the punch.
“My mom — it was so weird — I didn’t get the chance [to surprise her because] she came over and was looking at my wine, which she never does,” she recalled. Her mom yelled, “‘What is this?! ‘And that’s how it happened. I was like, ‘Well, you ruined the surprise.’ But I guess moms have intuition.”
Perry said that nobody among her inner circle sensed she was pregnant — not just because she was working hard to hide it — but because she’s always had a healthy appetite. She said she’s “always been hungry... They just thought I was like curvy and hungry — and, yes, I am curvy and hungry.”
Perry said "Never Worn White" is about commitment to her future husband Bloom, who has a 9-year-old son, Flynn, with his ex-wife Miranda Kerr, with whom Perry has credited for “maturing” her. She said the words just “fell out of my mouth“ as she sang lines like, “Cause I’ve never worn white/But I wanna get it right/Yeah, I really wanna try with you.” And she can’t wait to marry Bloom and wear white, pointing out that she didn’t even wear the color when she married her first husband, Russell Brand.
It was in that song that Perry cradled her stomach with both hands and sang, "See us in 60 years with a full family tree (I do)," revealing to her many fans, the KatyCats, that’s she’s expecting.
She and Bloom have been together on and off since 2016. They made their public debut that year, split in 2017, reunited in 2018 and announced their engagement on February 2019.
