Katy Perry’s Latest Music Video Has Landed Her in Another Messy Lawsuit
Those who keep up with Katy Perry know that she’s no stranger to some messy lawsuits. Over the years, for instance, she’s been in two unfortunate and long-winded battles over real estate. Most recently, she might be facing another one as she’s under investigation over her music video for her new song “Lifetimes.”
The music video, which was released five days ago on Aug. 8, shows the former American Idol judge enjoying the sun and frolicking in the sea in Ibiza and throughout Spain’s Balearic Islands.

Since the release, however, the Balearic Islands Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Natural Environment released a statement to the press calling out her behavior. According to the statement, which was released on Aug. 13, the production company behind the clip “had not requested authorization” for filming.
The statement also included a snippet of the Natural Resources Management Plan that could indicate that Perry and her production team committed potential environmental damage.
“The filming of photographic reports, cinematographic, videography or of any other kind that involves the taking of images in any medium and format with an advertising or commercial exhibition purpose, requires the express authorization of the competent ministry for the environment, without prejudice to other authorizations that can be granted by the corresponding authorities and bodies, including those pertaining to property rights,” the statement read.
Perry has yet to answer to the claims on social media, and has been promoting her new music non-stop. “have you watched the LIFETIMES video yet? ????,” she wrote in one post on Instagram three days ago.
Of course, this isn’t the first backlash Perry has faced with her new album. With her first single, “Woman’s World,” fans of Perry were up in arms over her so-called faux-feminist anthem, which seemed to stereotype women rather than empower them.
“We’re kind of just having fun, being a bit sarcastic with it,” Perry explained in a video after the backlash. “It’s very slapstick and very on-the-nose and with this set, it’s like ‘Oh, we’re not about the male gaze but we really are about the male gaze.’ And we’re really overplaying it and on the nose because we’re about to get smashed which is like a reset for my idea of the feminine divine. It’s a whole new world we go to after this.”
Unsurprisingly, the idea that the single was made for the sake of satire didn’t land with viewers. “When you have to give this much of an explanation, the bit doesn’t work. We need female empowerment, not this!” wrote one commenter. “I don’t think you read the room with this video,” wrote another. “It just looks like an excuse to showcase your rockin’ body. It’s not ‘ironic’ or empowering. Pls do better, and collaborate more wisely next time too. Girls look up to you x.” Eek!
