Katy Perry will receive Video Vanguard Award at 2024 VMAs
MTV has announced that singer Katy Perry will receive the 2024 Video Vanguard Award at the VMAs for her career achievements in music videos. She follows in the footsteps of other Vanguards including Michael Jackson, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Rihanna and Missy Elliott. As part of the celebration of her videography, Perry will also perform live during the telecast on September 11.
“Katy is a musical powerhouse and true pop culture icon. With her game changing creative vision, she has become a global phenomenon and taken over the world’s biggest stages. Katy’s prowess will be on full display live on the VMAs with a can’t-miss, career-encompassing performance celebrating her biggest moments and chart-topping hits,” said Bruce Gillmer, President of Music, Music Talent, Programming and Events, Paramount and Chief Content Officer, Music, Paramount+.

Perry has won five competitive VMAs in her career: Video of the Year for “Firework” (2011), Best Collaboration and Best Special Effects for “E.T.” featuring Kanye West (2011), Best Art Direction for “Wide Awake” (2012) and Best Female Video for “Dark Horse” featuring Juicy J (2014). Her last nomination was Best Cinematography for “Harleys in Hawaii” (2020).
She is set to release her seventh studio album, “143,” on September 20. But the lead-up to that release hasn’t been totally smooth sailing. The first single from the album, “Woman’s World,” drew criticism for the involvement of co-writer/producer Dr. Luke, who was accused of sexual abuse by Kesha. Then another single, “Lifetimes,” was accompanied by a music video being investigated for causing environmental damage. Perhaps the Video Vanguard Award and its accompanying performance will get her musical comeback back on track.
