Keira Knightley Gave a Rare Insight Into How Her Love Story With Husband James Righton Began
In Hollywood, celebrity couples have some major decisions to make. They can either choose to be a public couple, sharing PDA on red carpets and so on, or decide to keep their relationship private, for them and themselves only. For Keira Knightley and James Righton, who have been married since 2013, the pair managed to strike a perfect medium; they only talk about their relationship rarely, and their public appearances are few and far between.
Most recently, the Pride & Prejudice star and her musician husband gave one of those fan-loved glimpses into their relationship in an August 5 episode of iHeartRadio’s Ruthie’s Table 4 podcast. In it, the married pair talked about their relationship and looked back at the first time they met back in 2011.

According to Knightley, their meeting was meant to be. “That week my agent said to me, ‘I’ve had a dream that you’re meeting your future husband this week,’ and I was like, ‘That’s exciting,'” she said, per People. “So I got invited out to loads of things and I have to say I’d met a load of people that week and I was like, ‘This isn’t happening.'”
But, almost adamant about making her agent’s prediction a reality, Knightley agreed to more events than usual that week, including an Academy Awards viewing party she wouldn’t usually attend. When she arrived, however, the party wasn’t as exciting as she expected. But then her friend Tim Phillips said he’d be coming by with friends.
“Anyway, the door of this private room opens and my friend Tim’s head comes around [with another friend] and the third head to come around was James,” she remembered of their first meeting. “And James grabbed a seat and said, ‘Hello, I’m your future husband,’ and there he is.” Talking about confidence!
With an opener like that, it’s no wonder Knightley was immediately smitten by the musician. “We basically ate and drank until we got married,” she said. “Well, drank until I got pregnant.”
After getting married in 2013, Knight and Righton welcomed daughters Edie in 2015 and Delilah in 2019.
“It was great because it was a bunch of girls, we were all in our early [to] mid-twenties,” Knightley said as she looked back on their night. “We were all single and we were having a really, really, really, really good time and so I met [James] in the middle of that when he was also having a really, really, really, really good time.”
Also in the conversation, Knightley looked back at the moment she knew Righton was “The One” – and no, it wasn’t that one-liner.
“I knew that it was serious when he very seriously turned around to me and said, ‘You know, if you want to keep mayonnaise in the fridge, you can,'” Knightley remembered, after laughing of her husband’s hatred for putting condiments on food. “And I was like, wow.”
“You knew I was the one,” Righton added.
Looks like some things are just written in the stars!
