Kel Mitchell Reveals the Acting Advice He Gave His Kids After Their Good Burger 2 Cameos (Exclusive)

The 'Kenan and Kel' star opened up to PEOPLE at the Kids Choice Awards in July 2024

Kel Mitchell is giving his kids some top tier acting advice.

The actor, 45, and his Kenan & Kel show costar Kenan Thompson, 46, reunited at the Kids Choice Awards on Saturday, July 13, where the dad of four spoke to PEOPLE about his kids' acting careers following their appearance in his film, Good Burger 2.

Mitchell is dad to kids Honor, 4, and Wisdom, 6, whom he shares with wife Asia Lee, as well as son Lyric, 24, and daughter Allure, 22, whom he shares with ex-wife Tyisha Hampton.

The proud dad told PEOPLE that the kids' cameos were "for fun," but noted that he'll continue to support their acting careers if they end up wanting to follow in dad's footsteps.

"Well, you know what? It was for fun because they just enjoyed it and wowed the producers. You know what I mean?" Mitchell said. "So it was for fun, but if they want to continue to do it, I'll support them, but they got to want to do it."

Mitchell then dished out some advice, telling his kids to "have a good sense of self and faith."

"And then they have a dad that has been through it so he can actually help them out through it all. But they got to love it," he added.

Mitchell and Lee revealed that they were expecting their second child together in May 2020, when the comedian enlisted the help of his wife (showing off her baby bump) and their daughter Wisdom to creatively leverage the "Wipe It Down" challenge that was making the rounds on TikTok at the time.

"This Dad Is Going to Be a Daddy Again" read Mitchell's shirt as the star began wiping a bathroom mirror along to the song. Asia soon joined in wearing a similar "Mom" shirt before their daughter got in on the fun too, smiling along with her parents as they pointed at Asia's growing belly.

"IT'S A BOY," the video proclaimed over a blue background at the very end.

Mitchell and Thompson have been friends since starring on All That in 1994, but their bond hasn’t always been this tight. In November 2023, Thompson, 46, and Mitchell, 45, opened up to PEOPLE about what strained their friendship and how they came back together.

"It was just kind of seeking an individual establishment because we were children when we met and then we grew into adults," Thompson said. "We had yet to kind of discover what our adult life was like without work being involved."

After some “time” — although “ridiculously too long” — the Saturday Night Live star said they reconnected and learned about one another as adults instead of kids. Mitchell recalled there was one phone call that brought them closer again.

"We talked for at least about an hour or two and just was like, 'Yeah, man,' we're talking about everything," the Game Shakers alum shared. "And that bond was there, which I think is awesome. It's cool to see the dynamic of us as adults. Kenan and Kel as adults."
