Keri Hilson On New Music: “I’m Not Done; I’m Not Finished”

It’s been over a decade since Keri Hilson’s last album or single, but the Grammy-nominated singer has confirmed that she is returning to the music scene — sooner than later.

On Hilson’s recent appearance on Tank and J. Valentine’s R&B Money podcast, the 40-year-old explained that after having a successful acting career, it’s now “back to music.”

“That’s all there’s left to do. I’m not done. I’m not finished,” said Hilson.

The Almost Christmas actress confessed that there were “a lot of things” that stalled her musical comeback.

“I blame it on one thing, but really, it was years of a struggle. Amen. I fought through that, but I’m free, and I’m ready,” she explained.

Hilson continued, “Sometimes you can’t create with burdens, with a dark cloud. Under duress… I feel closest to God when I’m creating. That is supposed to be a burdenless space. It should be. That is supposed to be full freedom. I’m a channel in this moment. I’m a vessel. I need to listen. I need to hear. But there was so much stress, depression, division amongst my team. I mean one thing after the next and then my dad died.”

The Energy” singer revealed that she previewed her new music to someone “who really knows, who’s been on top for a very long time” and that person called it “tall and mighty.”

Back in 2016, a false press release leaked announcing a new album titled L.I.A.R. (Love Is A Religion).

While the album title was correct, Hilson shared on Twitter that the LP wasn’t ready just yet.

Three years later, she teased new music again to commemorate the 10th anniversary of her debut album. Taking to Instagram, she wrote, “Today marks 10 years since the release of my first studio album, In A Perfect World. I didn’t mean to be gone so long, I only needed my real world to be perfect… It is now. Thank you for your patience. The wait is over. I’m ready. Summer 2019.”

However, the season came and went with the album remaining unfinished. Last year, she co-headlined The Millennium Tour with Mario and Bow Wow. Watch Hilson’s full R&B Money episode above.
