Kerry Washington’s Inspiring Speech at the DNC Was Topped Off With This Fan-Loved Reunion

On the fourth and final day of the Democratic National Convention, actress Kerry Washington inspired us all. Taking the stage to rally up the audience, Washington opened up about her story, and motivated audiences both in-person and online to use their voice.

“As I stand here, I know that there are folks on social media already saying, ‘Go back to your TV show, shut up and act!'” the Unprisoned star said at the beginning of her speech. “But I am not here tonight as an actor, I am here as a mother, a daughter, a proud union member, the granddaughter of immigrants, and a Black woman descended from enslaved people. I am here tonight because I am an American and I am a voter.”

“I am the one standing on this stage but I am not the lead character in this story,” Washington then continued, telling audience members, “You are.” “You are the fixers, dare I say it, you are the Olivia Popes,” Washington joked, referencing her character in Scandal, who was a crisis management expert.

“You are the superheroes saving this democracy, it is you! Not me… who have the greatest power to convince your loved ones to vote,” Washington continued.

Finalizing her speech, she then brought out her beloved Scandal co-star, and fellow DNC host, Tony Goldwyn. Together, the two asked the stadium to take out their phones and join them in chanting “When we fight, we win!”

“Are you ready for Kamala Harris to win?” Washington then asked, to which Goldwyn and the crowd screamed “Yes!” “Good because when Kamala Harris wins, America wins,” Washington said.

Of course, Scandal fans watching the moment were beaming with excitement. “The way I absolutely leaped in the air and screamed at my TV ??,” wrote one fan on Instagram. “Former President Fitzgerald Thomas Grant III and First Lady Olivia Grant supporting Kamala Harris ?????? I LOVE TO SEE IT!!!!?” wrote another.

Prior to their joint onstage appearance, Goldwyn, who spoke during day one of the DNC, told Variety that he and Washington would do just about anything to help Harris’ campaign.

“I would say those chances are slim,” Goldwyn said of them gracing the DNC stage together. “But if Kamala asked us to, I suppose we would.” Looks like Harris called in another favor!
