Kevin Costner announced via social media on Thursday that he and the hit television series “Yellowstone” are officially through. The 69-year-old Oscar, Emmy, and Golden Globe winner is deep in promo mode for his massive “Horizon: An American Saga” project, and still circling his wagons to get the third and fourth chapters financed and filmed. As such, he told fans, “I just want to reach out and let you know that after this long year and a half of working on ‘Horizon’ and doing all the things that that’s required and thinking about ‘Yellowstone’, that beloved series that I love, that I know you love. I just realized that I’m not going to be able to continue, Season 5 or into the future.”

He added that the modern-day Western created by Taylor Sheridan and John Linson, which inspired two prequel series and has several other spinoffs in development, “was something that really changed me.”

He continued, “I loved it and I know you loved it. I just wanted to let you know that I won’t be returning. I love the relationships that I’ve been able to develop. And I’ll see you at the movies.

The news is not a surprise to anyone following the saga of “Yellowstone” closely. Indeed, the feud between Costner and Sheridan is like a real-life Ryan Murphy saga with chaps and spurs. Officially, it is nothing but respect between the two men, but “once the lawyers got involved” it was all over. The fifth season’s shooting schedule has been delayed and adjusted several times.

In the meantime, Costner has (partially) self-financed the first half of his mammoth manifest destiny “Horizons” project. Chapter One, clocking in at three hours and one minute, is in theaters next week. Its debut at the Cannes Film Festival was met with a muted response. Chapter Two comes out on August 16. Production on Chapter Three is happening now, but was delayed, initially due to the SAG-AFTRA strikes, and then as Costner secured more funding. The plan is to roll directly into Chapter Four when the third entry wraps. The saga has an enormous cast including Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Jena Malone, Luke Wilson and Costner himself in a preposterously large light blue hat.
