Kevin Costner will receive special Filmmaker Award from Motion Picture Sound Editors

Motion Picture Sound Editors have announced that actor-director Kevin Costner will receive their special Filmmaker Award when the 72nd Annual MPSE Golden Reel Awards are presented on Sunday, Feb. 23, 2025, in Los Angeles. In addition, supervising sound editor Greg Hedgepath will be honored with the Career Achievement Award.

MPSE president David Barber said in a statement, “Kevin Costner has captivated audiences with his powerful storytelling throughout his illustrious career. From epic Westerns to poignant dramas, his use of sound as an integral component of his cinematic storytelling has stirred our emotions and immersed viewers in the worlds he’s created for decades. This passion for sound is abundantly clear in his latest ambitious project, the ‘Horizon’ saga. We are thrilled to honor him with the Filmmaker Award, recognizing his exceptional contributions to the art of storytelling through sound in film and television.”

Barber added, “Greg Hedgepath is a true titan in the world of sound. His contributions to cinema are immense, spanning decades and encompassing a remarkable range of genres. From the heart-pounding intensity of ‘Speed’ and ‘Twister’ to the nuanced drama of ‘Selma’ and ‘Straight Outta Compton,’ Greg’s work has consistently elevated storytelling through the power of sound. He is a master craftsman, an innovator, and an inspiration. This award is a testament to the profound impact he has had on the art of sound.”

Costner won a pair of Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director for the epic western “Dances with Wolves” (1990). He’s also the man behind films including “The Postman” (1997), “Open Range” (2003), and most recently “Horizon: An American Saga” (2024). All three of his previous films as a director have been nominated for Golden Reel Awards. Meanwhile, Hedgepath has worked on films including “Blade” (1998), “Hustle and Flow” (2005), “The Incredible Hulk” (2008), and “Dolemite Is My Name” (2019), to name just a few. He’s a two-time Golden Reel Award winner out of 10 nominations, and he picked up a Primetime Emmy nom for “Live from Baghdad” in 2003, though he has yet to contend for an Oscar.
