Kevin Costner’s Wife Christine Baumgartner Files for Divorce After Nearly 19 Years of Marriage
It’s over. Kevin Costner and his wife, Christine Baumgartner, have called it quits after nearly 19 years of marriage, Us Weekly can confirm.
The fashion designer, 49, filed for divorce from the Yellowstone actor, 68, on Monday, May 1, in Santa Barbara, California, according to documents obtained by Us. Per TMZ, the Field of Dreams star filed his response the following day. Baumgartner reportedly cited "irreconcilable differences” as the cause of the split.
The pair, who wed in 2004, share three children: Cayden, 15, Logan, 14, and Grace, 12. The Bodyguard star, for his part, also shares Annie, 38, Lily, 36, and son Joe, 34, with his first wife, Cindy Silva, and son Liam, 27, with ex-girlfriend Bridget Rooney. According to TMZ, Christine has asked for joint custody of their kids.
"It is with great sadness that circumstances beyond his control have transpired which have resulted in Mr. Costner having to participate in a dissolution of marriage action," Costner’s rep said in a statement to TMZ on Tuesday. "We ask that his, Christine's, and their children's privacy be respected as they navigate this difficult time."
Prior to their split, Costner and Baumgartner celebrated the Dances With Wolves actor’s big Golden Globe win after he took home the trophy for Best Actor in Drama Series for his role in Yellowstone. While the pair were unable to be at the January awards show — the freeways were closed due to the ongoing floods in Southern California — Baumgartner threw her husband a special party at home.
“Chris had a dress, I had a tuxedo [but] it was in another hotel in L.A. I never like to be too cool for school, I wanted to be there,” he recalled in the following month while unboxing his award. “Christine realized that my heart was a little bit low.”
The Hidden Figures star revealed that Baumgartner put together a celebration at their Santa Barbara home as they watched the ceremony with their children in their family den. When he was announced as the winner, his family “stood up and cheered” for him, he admitted in a February Instagram video.
While Costner has received critical acclaim for his portrayal of John Dutton on the western series, rumors have swirled that he is potentially exiting the show. In February, Deadline reported that Paramount Network was considering ending the drama after season 5 because of Costner’s alleged scheduling conflicts. The network, however, denied the rumors that Costner was leaving while stating they hoped Costner would remain part of the Yellowstone family “for a long time to come.”
“Thanks to the brilliant mind of [show creator] Taylor Sheridan, we are always working on franchise expansions of this incredible world he has built,” said a rep from the network in a statement to Deadline. “Matthew McConaughey is a phenomenal talent with whom we’d love to partner.”
In April, it was confirmed that McConaughey would be joining the Yellowstone franchise in a new spinoff series. Part 2 of season 5 of Yellowstone has yet to start filming even though it's expected to air this summer.
