Kevin Smith says massive heart attack was the 'best thing that ever happened'
Nearly two months after suffering a massive heart attack, filmmaker Kevin Smith sat down with Today show hosts Savannah Guthrie and Craig Melvin for his first televised interview since the incident.
Smith was in good spirits, despite nearly dying that fateful night in February when he abruptly canceled a comedy show after falling ill. He explained that while the doctors were operating on him —he was awake, by the way — he was terrified. “I was afraid of dying, that’s my biggest ever, but it happened almost, and I was OK. I lived through it,” the 47-year-old comedian said.
Smith revealed he didn’t even realize he’d suffered a heart attack until after he was brought to the hospital, saying, “I didn’t know until I was in the operating room that I had a heart attack. Nobody told me. I didn’t feel like I was having a heart attack. I didn’t feel like it was happening.”
Since the heart attack, Smith has lost 32 pounds and hopes to lose an additional 43. He started with a plant-based diet but is currently on Weight Watchers. Smith expressed how much better he feels now that his health is back on track.
“I feel great,” Smith said. “Honestly, the heart attack was the best thing that ever happened to me.”
