Kiefer Sutherland Mourns His Dad Donald Sutherland: 'He Loved What He Did and Did What He Loved'

Kiefer Sutherland is reflecting on his father Donald Sutherland's legacy.

On Thursday, June 20, just moments after the longtime actor's agent confirmed that he died at age 88, Donald's son and fellow actor Kiefer, 57, shared a heartfelt post to X (formerly Twitter) looking back on his dad's career.

"With a heavy heart, I tell you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away," Kiefer wrote alongside a black-and-white photo of himself as a kid with his dad. "I personally think one of the most important actors in the history of film. Never daunted by a role, good, bad or ugly."

"He loved what he did and did what he loved, and one can never ask for more than that," Kiefer finished the post. "A life well lived."

Donald, who most recently starred in television series including The Undoing, Trust and Swimming with Sharks, is survived by his five children, including Kiefer, whom he shared with ex-wife actress Shirley Douglas, and five grandchildren.

Sutherland, who was also previously married to Lois Hardwick, wed actress Francine Racette in 1972, and shared kids Roeg, Rossif and Angus with her. He was also father to daughter Rachel with Douglas, who died in 2020 at 86.

In 2022, Kiefer spoke candidly in an interview with The Guardian about how he was inspired by his father to go into acting.

"It's hard to think of another actor who's been as prolific and made films as diverse as Ordinary People, Don't Look Now, Fellini's Casanova, Bertolucci's 1900 and The Hunger Games," he said of his dad. "His influence was to make my career as diversified and interesting as possible, which he taught me by doing, not by saying, which was really cool."

The actor played Mr. Bennet in 2005's Pride and Prejudice with Keira Knightley and Hawkeye Pierce in 1970's M*A*S*H, and had countless notable film roles in movies like Ordinary People (1980) and Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978), plus as the villainous President Snow in all four Hunger Games movies alongside Jennifer Lawrence.

CAA's Missy Davy confirmed to PEOPLE that Donald died on Thursday in Miami.

"A private celebration of life will be held by the family," Davy said.
