Killer Mike Addresses Arrest At Grammys And Son’s Kidney Transplant On New Single, “Humble Me”
Killer Mike opens up about his arrest at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards in his new single, “Humble Me,” from his forthcoming studio album.
Released on Monday (July 1), following his victory in the Best Rap Album category at the 2024 BET Awards, “Humble Me” finds Killer Mike addressing his detainment by the LAPD in February 2024. The rapper was reportedly involved in an alleged physical altercation with a security guard, resulting in him being handcuffed and led out of the venue.
“I won at the Grammys for spitting my grammar/ Did that for Atlanta, bruh/ Swept up like a janitor, got sent to the slammer bruh,” Mike rhymed on the track. “The devil be doing you right when you doing it/ The devil will ruin you, behind me Satan/ I walked out the door, my head up and handcuffs in pride.”
Charged with misdeameanor battery, the Run the Jewels member recalls his thoughts while in police custody, as well as receiving news of his son receiving a match for a kidney donor upon his release.
“I had to quiet my mind, I prayed and I prayed and I prayed/ The liars were lying their lies/ I kept on just keeping my faith/ The devil put me on this whipping post/ The lord did not lie on there with me/ So I went to sleep as free as can be and the next day my son got a kidney,” he rapped.
The release of “Humble Me” comes in the midst of a watershed year in the emcees career, as he’s received a succession of accolades for his 2023 album Michael, which has been hailed as one of the best rap projects of the previous year.
In addition to sweeping the 66th annual Grammy’s rap categories with wins for Best Rap Album, Best Rap Song, and Best Rap Performance, Killer Mike recently took home his latest piece of hardware for Best Rap Album at the 2024 BET Awards.
