'Killers of the Flower Moon' nominated for 10 Oscars: Here's the Academy Awards it's up for
Martin Scorsese's made-in-Oklahoma epic "Killers of the Flower Moon" is nominated for 10 Oscars, including best picture.
Lily Gladstone, the fact-based drama's Native American star, earned an Oscar nomination for best actress as she continues to make cinematic history this awards season: Gladstone is the first Native American to be nominated for best actress in the nearly 100-year history of the Academy Awards.
Her co-star Robert De Niro, already a two-time Oscar winner ("Raging Bull," "The Godfather: Part II") was nominated for best supporting actor, while Scorsese received a nod for best director when the nominees for the 96th Academy Awards were announced Tuesday morning.
What Oscar nominations did 'Killers of the Flower Moon' receive and what history did it make?
With his nomination for "Killers of the Flower Moon," Scorsese, 81, now has been nominated for best director 10 times, becoming the most nominated living director in Academy Awards history. The native New Yorker, who won the best director Oscar for 2006's "The Departed," surpasses Steven Spielberg's nine career best director nominations.
Along with its nods for best picture, best actress, best director and best supporting actor, "Killers of the Flower Moon" received six additional Oscar nominations.
The Western crime drama is nominated for best cinematography by Rodrigo Prieto; best production design for Jack Fisk and Adam Willis; best costume design for Jacqueline West and best editing for Thelma Schoonmaker.

How did 'Killers of the Flower Moon' make Oscars history with Indigenous nominees in both music categories?
"Killers of the Flower Moon" received a best score nomination for the late Robbie Robertson. Robertson, who died last August at the age of 80, was the son of a Cayuga and Mohawk mother and lived on the Six Nations Reserve in Canada southwest of Toronto as a youth. After a 45-year partnership with Scorsese, the composer received his first Oscar nomination posthumously for "Killers of the Flower Moon."
The movie also is nominated for best original song for “Wahzhazhe (A Song For My People)," with music and lyrics by Oklahoma-based Osage Nation composer Scott George. The song was performed by Osage Tribal Singers.
Robertson and George are the first Indigenous nominees in their respective categories. Plus, George is the first member of the Osage Nation to be nominated for an Academy Award.
“Congratulations to all Oscar nominees for 'Killers of the Flower Moon'; we are overjoyed that the hard work put into making this film is being celebrated,” Osage Nation Principal Chief Geoffrey Standing Bear said in a statement.
“Osage Nation is especially proud that Osage composer Scott George, consultants Kenny and Vann Bighorse, and all our tribal singers are receiving this extraordinary recognition for ‘Wahzhazhe (A Song For My People).’ For us, there’s nothing better than hearing our singers around the drum. We are pleased that the Academy members recognize the strength and beauty behind this song.”
Now streaming on Apple TV+, "Killers of the Flower Moon" focuses on a dark and often-overlooked chapter of Oklahoma history: The 1920s "Reign of Terror," a series of brutal murders of oil-rich Osage Nation citizens.
With its star-studded cast and reported $200 million budget, "Killers of the Flower Moon" is the largest movie production ever undertaken in the Sooner State.
Filmed in and around Osage County in 2021, Scorsese's 3 1/2-hour fact-based drama is adapted from David Grann's 2017 best-selling book “Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI."
In what Oscar categories was 'Killers of the Flower Moon' snubbed?
A previous best actor Oscar winner for 2015's "The Revenant," Leonardo DiCaprio did not receive a best actor nomination for "Killers of the Flower Moon." This year's best actor nominees are Colman Domingo for "Rustin," Cillian Murphy for "Oppenheimer," Bradley Cooper for "Maestro," Jeffrey Wright for "American Fiction" and Paul Giamatti for "The Holdovers."
Scorsese and co-writer Eric Roth, a previous Oscar winner for penning 1994's "Forrest Gump," were left out of the best adapted screenplay category. This year's nominees for best adapted screenplay are "American Fiction," "Barbie," "Oppenheimer," "Poor Things" and "The Zone of Interest."
What movies are competing against 'Killers of the Flower Moon' for the Oscars?
Actors Zazie Beetz and Jack Quaid revealed the nominees in all 23 categories for the 96th Academy Awards Tuesday morning via a live-stream presentation from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, California.
Ten films are nominated this year for best picture:
"Killers of the Flower Moon"
"Oppenheimer"
"Barbie"
"American Fiction"
"Poor Things"
"The Zone of Interest"
"The Holdovers"
"Past Lives"
"Anatomy of a Fall"

Christopher Nolan's historic epic "Oppenheimer" garnered a leading 13 Oscar nominations, including best picture, director, actor for Murphy, supporting actor for Robert Downey Jr. and supporting actress for Emily Blunt.
Yorgos Lanthimos’ blackly comic fantasy "Poor Things" nabbed 11 nominations, including best picture, director, actress for Emma Stone and supporting actor for Mark Ruffalo.
Greta Gerwig's blockbuster "Barbie" scored eight Oscar nominations, including best picture, supporting actress for America Ferrera and supporting actor for Ryan Gosling. But the pop-culture phenomenon film experienced some of the most notable Academy Awards snubs, with Gerwig left out of the best director category and Margot Robbie omitted from the best actress contest.
Just how historic is Lily Gladstone's best actress Oscar nomination for 'Killers of the Flower Moon?'
Gladstone, who is NiMíiPuu, or Nez Perce, and Siksikaitsitapi, or Blackfeet, has proven an awards favorite for her powerful lead turn in "Killers of the Flower Moon" as Mollie Kyle Burkhart, a real-life Osage woman who was marked for death in the Reign of Terror.
Earlier this month, Gladstone became the first Indigenous performer to win the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama. The National Board of Review also named her best actress at its Jan. 11 gala in New York, where "Killers of the Flower Moon" received the best film award and Scorsese was named best director.
She was nominated for best actress at the recent Critics Choice Awards, where the trophy went to "Poor Things" star Stone.
Although she was snubbed when the BAFTA Awards nominations were announced last week, Gladstone also is nominated for best actress at the 30th Screen Actors Guild Awards, which will stream live globally Feb. 24 on Netflix.
Gladstone's Oscar nomination makes her the first Native American and just the fourth Indigenous performer to be nominated for best actress.
A British performer born in India, Merle Oberon, who is believed to have been of Māori and South Asian lineage, was nominated for best actress in 1935's “The Dark Angel." Born in Australia and raised in New Zealand, Maori performer Keisha Castle-Hughes broke out with her best actress-nominated turn in 2002's “Whale Rider.” And Indigenous Mexican schoolteacher-turned-actor Yalitza Aparicio earned her best actress nod for her film debut in 2018's “Roma."
What other movies made in Oklahoma have been nominated for Oscars?
"Killers of the Flower Moon" is the latest movie to be filmed in Oklahoma to be nominated for Oscars.
It joins the ranks of the 2020 immigrant drama "Minari," the 2013 family saga "August: Osage County," the 1996 blockbuster "Twister," the 1988 road movie "Rain Man," the 1956 Jules Verne adaptation "Around the World in 80 Days" and the 1940 Great Depression epic "The Grapes of Wrath."
