Kim Kardashian and Kanye West Amp Up PDA for Cameras at MTV VMAs, Ignore Each Other Backstage
There seemed to be a “diskonnect” between Kim Kardashian and Kanye West at the 2016 MTV VMAs.
The power couple was the toast of the room last night — everyone wanted to take selfies with her or get him alone to hear one of his bizarre rants in person. But with all the behind-the-scenes cameras running on MTV.com, aka the best part of last night’s show, they seemed “on” when the spotlight was on them and “off” when it wasn’t.
In their front row seats, the pair, who married in 2014, had their arms around one another and were even gazing into each other’s eyes. (Oh, Kanye, you genius you. Oh, Kim, you are the most beautiful woman on the planet.)
Backstage though, they sat apart even though there were chairs side by side. They seemed far more into their phones than each other.
Another peculiar moment was caught on camera when they were at their seats. While Beyoncé gave her speech after winning Video of the Year for “Formation,” Kim listened attentively as the audience camera was trained on her. Kanye tried to snuggle, but she shrugged him off.
Was Bey’s speech that good? We’d say it was fair.
Despite this apparent disconnect, Kanye gifted Kim, with whom he has two children, a new rock to wear at the show. According to People mag, the ring looks a lot like her hulking engagement ring, but it’s slightly different because they are rich and can buy each other slightly different 15-carat diamond rings. Also, he mentioned her in his VMAs speech, saying, “My wife is a G,” after he gave a shout-out to his ex Amber Rose and referenced Kim’s sex tape partner Ray J.
And couples who think their spouses are gangster stay together, right?
In fairness, when your job is being famous — as it is for Kim — you’re pretty much working throughout the duration of an awards show. And she was on the clock, taking selfies with everybody, including the Final Five, Michael Phelps, Ariana Grande, Britney Spears, Cassie and Diddy, Ashley Graham, and the mothers of Trayvon Martin, Oscar Grant, and Eric Garner. And she also had to introduce Spears without flubbing her lines. (Oops.)
We guess you can’t be on all of the time.
