Kim Kardashian's Reason for Wearing a Cardigan With Met Gala Outfit Has Us Scratching Our Heads
Kim Kardashian’s look at the 2024 Met Gala had a story attached to it, but not everyone is buying that it tied into “The Garden of Time” theme on Monday night. The 43-year-old SKIMS founder wore a gorgeous John Galliano for Maison Margiela gown, but it was how she accessorized it that confused just about everyone.
The silver metallic flowers that cascaded down the curve-hugging dress (and that corset!) were paired with a gray sweater, that upon closer look, was pilled like it had been worn for years. It didn’t seem to fit with fashion’s biggest night, but Kim told Vogue that the cardigan was a purposeful accessory. The ensemble represented “the wildest night of my life in a garden,” and after her fun romp, she grabbed her “boyfriend’s sweater and threw it on and had to get to work. And my hair’s all messed up.”

So, if you thought the reality star looked a little more rumpled than usual, you were right. She had that sexy bedhead hair for a reason. Not everyone on the internet bought this fashion storyline, though, because the critics were out en masse about her outfit. “She’s wearing probably a $100,000 dress and put a little sweater over it! For the MET Gala! She shouldn’t be invited back,” said one internet user. Another account praised her dress, but then went in hard about the cardigan, adding, “Unfortunately, her efforts have been overshadowed by ice blonde overly teased hair and a kindergarten teacher sweater.”
The message of her garden fling didn’t reach the masses as people speculated that she might have had a wardrobe mishap, like the Marilyn Monroe zipper issue which was covered with a wrap in 2022. Another theory was that she had a psoriasis flare-up, a skin condition Kim often speaks about. But as Marie Claire called out, “If you thought the sweater looked haphazardly placed—that was apparently the whole point. Either way, the accessory missed the mark and overshadowed a pretty spectacular dress.
The one thing Kim is willing to do is take a fashion risk — sometimes she hits, and sometimes she misses. This Met Gala was a rare misstep.
