King Charles Makes Surprising Revelation About His Grandchildren's Interests
King Charles III shared some insight into his grandchildren’s interests while delivering a speech at a state banquet earlier this week.
At the time of his remarks, the 75-year-old monarch addressed Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako of Japan during the June 25 event held at Buckingham Palace. While commenting on the “remarkable array of cultural exchange and coproduction” between Japan and the United Kingdom over the last several decades, the king detailed a few ways the leaders have personally engaged in those efforts.
“I know from Your Majesty's fascinating record of your experiences at Oxford—as well as my memories of our time spent together at the opera and fly fishing—that these opportunities to spend time abroad create lifelong friendships and memories,” Charles said, teeing himself up for his next playful comment about Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.
“I am only sorry to report that I haven’t had any better luck with more recent attempts at fishing—the Pokémon phrase ‘gotta catch ‘em all’ may resonate with my grandchildren, but for me, it is, perhaps, aspirational,” the king joked.
At that moment, the camera panned over to Prince William, who smiled at the reference to his three children. A clip of the Prince of Wales’ reaction was later shared on X, formerly Twitter, by Sky News.

Charles’ comment came just a few days after his oldest son revealed another of his children’s interests when he took George and Charlotte to see Taylor Swift perform at London’s Wembley Stadium as part of her hit international Eras Tour. As one viral video clip indicated, William appeared to be a dedicated Swiftie as fans spotted him dancing enthusiastically to the pop star’s hit song “Shake It Off.”
A photo that the royal family later shared on social media showed George and Charlotte looking just as excited as their father to be at the concert as they posed for a photo with the 14-time Grammy Award winner.
