Kirk Franklin Opens Up About Son Kerrion Being Bisexual And Viral Video Cursing Him Out
Kirk Franklin has long been respected for being a vessel for God, but his perception took a hit over the last few years after footage of him cursing out his son Kerrion surfaced online. The 54-year-old gospel artist recently opened up about that experience and their current relationship after his son came out as bisexual.
The “Looking For You” singer joined Cam Newton on Funky Friday last week and held nothing back about the trying experience. “I was very ashamed of myself for the lack of control,” he admitted. “No matter what the conversation was, that I felt was a disrespectful conversation, because I’m the father I have the responsibility. And because I know my son, I have the responsibility to take in totality the environment that I was in and I didn’t do a good job.”
Franklin owned up to the fact that the manner he spoke to Kerrion “wasn’t the best” and reconciling their issues hasn’t been a walk in the park. “There have been good days, there have been bad days still,” he said. “I am praying that my son will feel and see the support that is there for him to become his best, and the discipline and the work that takes. I know that it can be overwhelming for him but I hope that he will see through it that he’s worth it. He’s worth it to himself to do the hard work with what God has, in his sovereignty, placed in your lap as a 36-year-old Black man.”
Cam Newton and Kirk Franklin bonded over watching their children deal with trauma and identity issues stemming from people expecting them to be just like their fathers. It was the ideal runway for the former NFL MVP to ask how Franklin has handled his son Kerrion acknowledging that he is bisexual.
“I’ve had conversations with Kerrion since he was a little boy,” he said. “I know my son. And my conversations with him have always been a consistent one. I love you and my love for you is not based on who you love. I love you. And that is my answer. That’s my answer as a Christian father who believes in the text. I love you and my love for you does not waver based on who you love.”
Kerrion came out in 2022 during an episode of Bad Boys Club. His friends were inquiring about his relationship status and sexual preference, to which he offered that he was polyamorous and identified as bisexual. This was a startling revelation, especially one year after people saw footage of Franklin cursing at him and threatening to break his neck. The monolithic view of Christianity reasonably led many to believe that Kirk Franklin would not accept this, but his conversation with Newton revealed otherwise.
