Kirstie Alley spends the amount she used to spend on 'coke' on flowers: 'Gift to myself'
It's been 40 years since Kirstie Alley got sober and the actress celebrates weekly with a gift to herself. The Cheers alum shared on Twitter that she "vowed to spend the same [money] weekly on flowers that I’d spent on drugs." So she purchases flowers at her local grocery store and makes the arrangements.
For u who don’t know much about me, I used to be a coke head. I quit drugs in 1979 & vowed to spend the same $ weekly on flowers that I’d spent on drugs. I buy & arrange my own flowers as a gift to MYSELF. I buy them in the grocery store ..:)!🥰🌷🌹🌺🌸 pic.twitter.com/WfbcHXjkVC

The actress has been open about her nearly three-year addiction to cocaine in the '70s. In an interview with Howard Stern in 2013, Alley said she was hooked on the drug after trying it for the first time when she separated from her first husband, Bob Alley, in 1977.
"I didn’t do drugs until I was 25," Alley recalled. "I got a divorce from my husband, and I started hanging out out with this guy I was sort of madly in love with. He had already done all of his drugs, but he had a lot of druggie friends."
"I had heard that cocaine made you peppy and happy and I was sort of depressed because I had gotten a divorce and wrecked everybody’s lives. So I thought, 'I’m gonna try this,'" she continued. "I took one snort of cocaine, and I go, 'Oh my God! I’m gonna do this every day for the rest of my life!'"
Alley noted, "I did a lot of cocaine. I was crazy." She feared at one point the drug would kill her.
The actress credits the Scientology rehab program, Narconon, forgetting her clean. When she stopped doing drugs she also stopped drinking.
"This program salvaged my life and began my acting career. When I was an interior designer in Wichita I was a druggie and life didn’t go well. I’d call in sick a lot, making excuses just so I could do coke," she told the Los Angeles Times. "When I came to Los Angeles in 1979 I went to the detox center at Narconon. It was like night and day once I had completed the program. I’ve never had the desire to do drugs since. When I was straight, I had the courage and energy to try to become an actress. I owe my career to my will to stop using."
Alley, who is a staunch defender of Scientology, replied to a snarky person on Twitter and said she has helped "thousands" of people get "off drugs."
I predicted someone would turn my lovely tweet into some kind of backhanded reprimand. I’ve been a spokes person for @narconon for almost 40 years and helped thousands off drugs. How’s that for an “investment”...Lil Deb? https://t.co/eO3TuNqAH0
