Kit Harington Confirms 'Game of Thrones' Jon Snow Spinoff is Officially Dead
Back in June 2022, Game of Thrones fans around the globe rejoiced at the news that HBO was developing a spinoff centered around Jon Snow with British actor Kit Harington reprising his role from the main series. But a dearth of news about the project since then didn't bode well for the endeavor, and Harington himself has now confirmed that the show is no longer in development.
The Blood for Dust star spoke to ScreenRant about the Jon Snow spinoff and broke down why he himself never addressed the project publicly.
"I hadn’t really ever spoken about it, because it was in development," Harington explained. "I didn’t want it leaked out that it was being developed, and I didn’t want the thing to happen where people kind of start theorizing, getting either excited about it or hating the idea of it, when it may never happen. Because in development, you look at every angle, and you see whether it’s worth it. And currently, it’s not."

The news that the Jon Snow series is officially dead in the water will certainly come as a disappointment for fans who wanted to see his character's backstory explored more deeply. Harington revealed that it fell apart after the team couldn't land on a plot for the series.
"Currently, it’s off the table, because we all couldn’t find the right story to tell that we were all excited about enough," he said. "So, we decided to lay down tools with it for the time being."
Never say never, though, as Harington won't go so far as to close the door on the project permanently. "There may be a time in the future where we return to it, but at the moment, no. It’s firmly on the shelf," he added.
For now, Game of Thrones fans will have to wait for the second season of House of the Dragon premiering June 16. Plus, there's already another spinoff in the works, with A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight set for a 2025 release.
