What to know about Mickey Guyton, the Black country music star who performed at DNC. And, when is she coming to Wisconsin?
Mickey Guyton left X swooning after her performance on the first night of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. This fall, the country music trailblazer will be returning to the Midwest on tour. And, that includes a stop in Wisconsin.
Guyton was the first celebrity performer of the night Monday, followed later by Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Jason Isbell. Musical legend James Taylor was also scheduled to perform.
Here's more about Guyton and her journey, where she'll be performing in Wisconsin and what song she did at the convention.
Who is Mickey Guyton?
After signing to Capitol Records Nashville, Guyton's first appearance was an all-star concert at the White House captured by PBS, according to the artist's website.
Guyton is a four-time Grammy Award nominee, and was the first Black female solo artist to earn a Grammy nomination in a country category. In 2021, she performed her song “Black Like Me" during the awards ceremony.
Also in 2021, she became the first Black woman to host the Academy of Country Music Awards. She was nominated for an ACM Award in 2016 and has performed at the event several times.
In 2022, Guyton performed the national anthem at Super Bowl LVI.
Guyton's new album, "House on Fire," drops at the end of next month, she announced on X Monday morning. A new song, called “My Side of the Country," is being released Friday.
A pair of EPs – “Unbreakable” in 2014 and an eponymous release in 2015 – earned the Arlington, Texas, native some recognition with the single “Better Than You Left Me," according to USA Today.
While Guyton has been fighting to carve out a successful career in country music for herself, she wants to use her platform to be a “voice for the voiceless,” especially other Black artists, USA TODAY reported.
