Kristen Stewart and Chlo? Sevigny flirt with danger in 'Lizzie' clip (Exclusive)
We all know the basic details — or at least, the rhyming ones — of the Lizzie Borden case. In 1892, Borden’s stepmother and father were killed (“Lizzie Borden took an ax, and gave her mother 40 wacks…”) and Lizzie, while acquitted for the ax murders, remains history’s No. 1 suspect. The new biopic, Lizzie, dramatizes the story of Borden’s life, and in particular, a forbidden love that might have driven her to do the unthinkable.
In this clip, Lizzie (Chlo? Sevigny), the daughter of a wealthy but withholding businessman, strikes up an odd conversation with the family’s new maid, Bridget (Kristen Stewart). She starts by reading her one of Shakespeare’s most famous love sonnets, then asks if the maid’s lack of education makes her “afraid.” “Men don’t have to know things, Bridget,” Lizzie says ominously. “Women do.” What can we say, flirting was different among 19th century spinsters! Lizzie premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, where critics praised Sevigny’s performance for finding a sympathetic antihero inside a notorious monster. The movie opens in theaters on Friday.
