Kristen Wiig reprises beloved ‘Saturday Night Live’ character in Target commercial
It’s legit!
Kristen Wiig reprised her fan-favorite “Saturday Night Live” role as the over-enthusiastic Target lady in a commercial for the company’s upcoming Target Circle Week.
In the ad, which according to a press release is one of 12 spots, the “Bridesmaids” star can be seen wearing her iconic bowl-cut wig as she wanders through the halls of the megastore rattling off random benefits of joining Target Circle.
“I can’t believe I get to work at Target,” Wiig, 50, says in a voiceover as the camera follows her.
“I hope she knows she’s getting deals automatically,” Wiig continues as the camera cuts to a woman putting a shirt in her basket. “I would tell her if it wasn’t a dream.”
“Looks like Pamela just let that guy know he could get unlimited same-day delivery,” gushes Wiig. “And she’s gonna save an extra 5% with a Target Circle card.”
“What’s that?” Wiig asks as a man picks up an alarm clock nearby. “Oh no, I don’t wanna wake up. There are too many deals!”
At that moment the ad cuts to Wiig on a scooter surrounded by several confused customers.
“But you are awake,” the man with the alarm clock says. “And the deals are real.”
“Then how do you explain Abe Lincoln over there by the chips?” Wiig retorts, nodding to a bearded man looking at her with worry.
The beloved character — whom Wiig portrayed several times during her seven-year tenure on “SNL” — rose to popularity for her chaotic energy, outlandish dialogue and, of course, the way she pronounces “Terget.”
Wiig’s beloved character is also sometimes joined by Justin Timberlake, who plays her equally bizarre friend “classic” Peg.
“Like so many, we’re big fans of Kristen Wiig and her iconic Target Lady character from ‘Saturday Night Live,'” Lisa Roath, executive vice president and chief marketing officer of Target, said in a statement.
“So as we prepare to introduce the new Target Circle and thousands of new deals during Target Circle Week, it’s only fitting that we partnered with Kristen to create some memorable new laughs courtesy of the one and only Target Lady.
“We’re thrilled with this campaign and can’t wait for everyone to see it and join in the fun that can only be found shopping at Target,” Roath added.
Wiig also expressed her excitement at portraying the character again.
“Target Lady is incredibly special to me because it’s one of the characters I created at the Groundlings and ended up on ‘SNL.’ She definitely loves Target! I mean, who doesn’t?” said Wiig. “It was so fun to bring her back after all this time, and we had so much fun imagining the world Target Lady sees inside the store today.”
Target’s Circle Week runs from April 7 to April 13.
The “Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar” actress’ announcement comes the same week as she prepares to host “SNL” for the fifth time. This makes her a member of the elite “five-timers club,” which includes Paul Rudd, John Mulaney, Steve Martin, Tina Fey, Alec Baldwin and Tom Hanks.
