Lace up Your Ice Skates and Get to Know the Stars From ‘The Cutting Edge’
Just because the Summer Olympics are upon us, doesn't mean we can't stop to think about figure skating! And what better way to do so than getting to know The Cutting Edge cast? The Cutting Edge, of course, is the hit romantic comedy from 1992 that follows disgraced Olympic figure skater Kate Moseley (Moira Kelly) after she is forced to team up with retired hockey player Doug Dorsey (D.B. Sweeney) to try and win the next Olympic Games. Too bad the two hate each other and the question becomes whether or not they will be able to put their differences aside long enough to win the competition. It's a romantic-comedy — what do you think?

Moira Kelly
CHARACTER PLAYED: Kate Moseley
BORN: March 6, 1968, in Queens, New York.
BEST KNOWN FOR: Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me (1992), The Lion King (1994), The West Wing (1999 to 2000), One Tree Hill (2003 t0 2009) and Twin Peaks: The Missing Pieces (2014).
PERSONAL: Kelly has been married to Stephen Eric Hewitt since 2000. They have two children together.
THOUGHTS ON CUTTING EDGE: Kelly and D.B. Sweeney might have had sizzling chemistry on screen, but that wasn't always the case, with Sweeney remembering, "What happened [was], I didn't know how to ice skate, and neither did she. They sent us to Sky Rink in New York City, which was on the 10th floor of a building on, like, 9th Avenue and 50th Street. MGM rented out a space there for us to go skate. For three months, we skated almost every day together, and I would stay and play hockey. It let us get to know each other in a different way than a normal rehearsal process, and it was very similar to what the characters go through in the movie. I think it was just a very natural and organic way to build a history for the characters."
FUN FACT: Kelly broke her ankle during the first week of filming, and had to wear a cast for a month. This caused production to delay filming all of the skating scenes until after she was healed.
D.B. Sweeney: The Cutting Edge cast
CHARACTER PLAYED: Doug Dorsey
BORN: November 14, 1961 on Long Island, New York.
BEST KNOWN FOR: Fire in the Sky (1993), Dinosaur (2000), Two Tickets to Paradise (2006), Taken 2 (2012), Haymaker (2021) and Megalopolis (2024).
PERSONAL: Sweeney has been married to Ashley Vachon since 2000. They have two children together.
THOUGHTS ON CUTTING EDGE: When asked what his favorite sequences were, Sweeney said, "The hockey scenes were really fun. I really enjoyed that part. I think my favorite scene to shoot was the scene with Moira and I where we're just about to go on, and I get sick to my stomach. I just thought it was such a funny setup and such a well-written script, and I thought Moira was just so good in that scene. All the scenes I had with Moira were fun. I've been really lucky with actors I've worked with in my career, but, really, Moira was the best"
FUN FACT: Sweeney and Kelly made a deal that they wouldn't do a sequel without each other.

PERSONAL: O'Quinn was married to Lori O'Quinn from 1979 until 2012. They had two children together.
THOUGHTS ON CUTTING EDGE: "It was a sweet little movie with D.B. Sweeney and Moira Kelly. I was her dad. D.B. was kind of talking about how he played hockey and he was a skater, but Moira wasn’t. By the time it was over, she was practically a full-fledged figure skater. It was amazing. D.B. was still scuffling around."
