Could Lady Gaga be the next live-action Harley Quinn?

In a new teaser released Thursday, the music icon confirmed she'll star in "Joker: Folie à Deux," the highly anticipated sequel for the 2019 film "Joker."

The original film grossed over $1 billion worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo, and was nominated for 11 Academy Awards, including best picture. Joaquin Phoenix won the best-actor Oscar for his performance in the movie.

Phoenix will return to play failed comedian and clown-faced troubled loner Arthur Fleck, who was incarcerated for murdering his favorite late-show host (Robert De Niro) at the end of the first film. Todd Phillips also returns to direct the sequel.

The movie is set to release October 4, 2024.

The "Bad Romance" singer did not say what role she'll be taking on, but the teaser gives a clue that she's likely starring as Batman villain Harley Quinn. In the clip, silhouettes of Phoenix and Gaga dance to brassy strains f the romantic standard "Cheek to Cheek" with Gaga wearing a heart on her cheek, a signature look for the comic book character.

USA TODAY reached out to Warner Bros., which had no other details at this time.

The phrase "Folie à Deux" refers to a shared mental disorder affecting two or more individuals, further increasing speculation for Gaga's role as Harley. Since the character was created in the “Batman: The Animated Series” in the early 1990s, Harley has been tied to Joker as an antagonistic sidekick, moll and romantic partner. The show portrayed their relationship as a toxic one with Joker often being abusive to Harley, something showcased in future comics, films and video games.

While long a favorite of comic fans, the Harley character gained more mainstream popularity after Margot Robbie's live-action adaptation in three Warner Bros. films: 2016’s “Suicide Squad,” 2020’s “Birds of Prey” and 2021’s “The Suicide Squad." Kaley Cuoco voices the character in the HBO Max animated series “Harley Quinn,” which premiered its third season July 28.

Gaga won an Oscar for her song in "A Star Is Born" and was nominated for best actress for her role in the film, losing to Renée Zellweger for her role in "Judy." Gaga didn't receive an Oscar nomination for her role as Patrizia Reggiani in 2021 film "House of Gucci," which many critics called a snub for the actress.
