At last! Judith Light (‘Poker Face’) wins first Primetime Emmy Award for Best Comedy Guest Actress
Saturday night at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards, Judith Light (“Poker Face”) won the trophy for Best Comedy Guest Actress. She plays Irene Smothers on the Peacock comedy series, and this marks her first career victory (on her fifth nomination) with the Primetime Television Academy. She also has two Daytime Emmys on her mantel for “One Life to Live.”
After being delayed since September due to the writers’ strike and actors’ strike, the Creative Arts Emmys for scripted fare finally took place on Saturday, January 6, with more awards for unscripted programs being doled out on Sunday, January 7. The official Primetime Emmys ceremony will air on Fox next Monday, January 15 with Anthony Anderson serving as host.

In Light’s nominated episode, “Time of the Monkey,” Irene shares a living unit in a retirement community with her longtime friend, Joyce (S. Epatha Merkerson), with whom she grows marijuana in their room and listens to music in the common room at a very loud volume. Charlie (Natasha Lyonne), working as a janitor at the facility, instantly becomes friends with the two ladies and they tell her about how they were both radicals who got locked up in the 1970s after a raid on their hideout that left Irene paralyzed and killed their mentor, Gabriel. Light’s duplicitous role was one that the Emmy voters simply couldn’t overlook.
