‘The Last of Us’ Season 2 trailer finally debuts
With help from the Pearl Jam song “Future Days,” HBO has revealed the first substantial look at “The Last of Us” Season 2.
The legendary grunge band’s closing track from the album “Lightning Bolt” factors prominently in the first Season 2 trailer for “The Last of Us,” which reveals the first look at new cast members Isabel Mercad (as Dina), Kaitlyn Dever (as Abby), and Young Mazino (as Jesse). The teaser also puts spotlights on Emmy winner Catherine O’Hara in an undisclosed guest role and Emmy winner Jeffrey Wright as Isaac (reprising his voice role from “The Last of Us Part II” video game).

“Say the thing you’re afraid to say. Say it out loud, no matter what it is, no matter how bad,” O’Hara’s character asks Joel (Emmy nominee Pedro Pascal) in the trailer, which starts with idyllic images of Joel and Ellie (Emmy nominee Bella Ramsey) before slowly giving way to the horror of the apocalypse and the cordyceps-infected population.
The official logline for Season 2 reveals a massive time jump that accounts for the brief moments of peace in the trailer: “After five years of peace following the events of the first season, Joel and Ellie’s collective past catches up to them, drawing them into conflict with each other and a world even more dangerous and unpredictable than the one they left behind.”
At the end of Season 1, Joel brutally murdered several resistance fighters and doctors to save Ellie from certain death – but his choice endangered the world’s population since Ellie is the only known person immune to the cordyceps outbreak. Joel then hid the truth from Ellie as they embarked on a new adventure. Fans of the blockbuster video game know where this tragic tale is eventually headed and Season 2 will likely further the story along – although the show itself might expand the video game’s sequel story into multiple television seasons.
“The Last of Us” Season 1 was a big hit for HBO in 2023 and won eight Emmys out of 24 total nominations, including two guest acting wins for Nick Offerman and Storm Reid. Season 2 of the show is already expected to be a major Emmys player next year.
“The Last of Us” will return to HBO in the early portion of 2025.
