“Over the past decade, John and his exceptional team have combined deep research and intelligence with cutting humor to tackle a broad range of subjects, both widely discussed and unconventional.” said Casey Bloys, chairman and CEO of HBO and Max Content, in a statement. “With an important election year on the horizon, we look forward to seeing what John has in store for audiences over the next three years.”
Added Oliver, “We’re very happy to get to keep making this show with our fantastic staff. We will continue trying to stretch the term ‘entertainment’ to the breaking point.”
Last Week Tonight has won the last seven Emmy Awards for best variety talk series, as well as seven straight honors for writing for a variety series. The show is moving to a different category — the newly created scripted variety series — for the 75th Emmys, where it will compete against fellow HBO series A Black Lady Sketch Show and NBC’s Saturday Night Live.
The show has also won a host of other trophies, including six Writers Guild of America Awards and a pair of Peabody Awards.
Avalon and Sixteen String Jack Productions produce Last Week Tonight. Oliver executive produces with Tim Carvell, Liz Stanton, Jon Thoday and James Taylor; Paul Pennolino directs.
