'Late Night With Seth Meyers' writer fires back at Kevin Spacey statement
Late Night With Seth Meyers writer Jenny Hagel fired back at Kevin Spacey for the tweet in which he apologized for allegedly having made sexual advances toward actor Anthony Rapp, who was 14 at the time. Spacey tweeted an apology in which he claimed that his alleged actions were “drunken behavior” and came out as gay.
Other artists in the LGBTQ community, such as Zachary Quinto, Billy Eichner, and Wanda Sykes, also issued sharp rebukes of Spacey’s statement.
In the segment “A Lot of Problems,” Hagel shot back at Spacey’s statement. She said, “First problem: It is inappropriate to respond to an accusation of pedophilia by saying, ‘I’m gay.’ Those two things are totally unrelated. The only appropriate response to ‘You tried to have sex with a 14-year-old’ is, ‘I am also a 14-year-old.’”
Hagel shared how problematic Spacey’s statement was to the LGBTQ community. She remarked, “Kevin Spacey blamed his actions on drunken behavior. That makes it sound like every gay person is two beers away from molesting a kid. I’m not. I’m two beers away from singing ‘Come to My Window’ at karaoke.”
