Latto Defends Sexually Explicit “Female Rap”, Says It’s Just “Entertainment”
There has been an ongoing conversation about the content of women’s rap and how many choose to lean into their sexuality within their music. Latto has spoken up in defense of herself and her peers in a recent interview with XXL.
“That, to me, is the entertainment of female rap,” the Atlanta rapper said. “And I think sometimes people—my peers, our peers in the industry, our male peers—take that as an invitation. Like, ‘Oh, yeah, she like that. I’m open to talking to you outside of music or like, whatever.’ I think they don’t really know how to keep it business.”
The “Put It On Da Floor Again” artist and her counterparts find themselves in a unique conundrum; some people don’t enjoy the content, and others try to use it as an opportunity to solicit more than just musical collaborations. Back when she released her album 777 in 2022, an unnamed rapper was being difficult about clearing his verse because she did not respond to his DM.
“I think we be under this microscope,” Latto said. “We’re heavily analyzed by blogs, fans, and commentators. We gotta go 10 times as hard as men do for just equal recognition. For instance, everybody know about my situation [of me] trying to clear the verse on my album. We just go through a lot more on the back end that people don’t know about.”
She went into more detail back in 2022 during an interview on BigBoyTV. “I was backed into a corner, like, bullied,” she said. “But I wish more females would speak up on stuff. I know like the label didn’t [step up]; they say, ‘You know, don’t do that. It’s bad business,’ or whatever. Man, these folks be trying to drop nuts on female rappers, like I’m not gonna shut up about it.”
Latto has persevered through all of her industry drama and had an amazing year in and out of music. In July, she debuted her limited edition Wingstop meal and new wing flavor, the Lemon Herb Remix. A few months later, she partnered with Halls for the “Rapper Wrote This Wrapper” campaign and delivered her brand of motivational quotes via cough drop wrappers. Check out the trailer below.
