In the film, starring Laura Dern and Liam Hemsworth, Dern portrays writer Katherine, who travels to a prestigious writer’s retreat in Morocco hoping that the remote setting will help solve her writer’s block to finish her book. “I think the point of travel is to show us the tiny place we occupy in the world,” Dern’s Katherine tells Hemsworth’s Owen. Later on, Owen is heard being told, “When you’re stuck in life, you need to do something irrevocable.”
The end of the trailer teases Katherine and Owen’s connection getting stronger, with Netflix teasing that the pair will have an “intoxicating, life-altering love affair.”
The film is directed by Susannah Grant, who previously worked with the streamer on the drama series Unbelievable. Liza Chasin produces for 3dot Productions, which has a multiyear first-look deal with the streamer. Grant and Sarah Timberman will also produce, with Kira Goldberg set to oversee for Netflix.
Lonely Planet premieres Oct. 11 on Netflix.
