Lauren Graham would love a 'Gilmore Girls' musical: 'I don’t think it’s a terrible idea!'
PASADENA, Calif. – Lauren Graham is totally OK with people making fun of "Gilmore Girls."
The actress is best known for her role on the mother/daughter drama, which aired on WB and CW from 2000-07 before being revived on Netflix in 2016. She has seen the episode of Apple TV+'s "The Morning Show" that includes (and makes a joke out of) a fake "Gilmore" Broadway musical, and she's not upset.
"I thought it was really loving," she told reporters at the Television Critics Association Friday. "I know maybe ("Gilmore" creator Amy Sherman-Palladino) was less excited."
Graham, who is currently singing and dancing on NBC's new musical comedy, "Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist" (returns Feb. 16, Sundays, 9 EST/PST), is most excited that her signature show still has such a big presence in the zeitgeist.
"Something I’m very proud of is the way 'Gilmore Girls' has its place in the world," she said. "I would never have expected it, but I try to just be very thankful to just be in pop culture. And I thought it was a compliment."
Graham thinks a "Gilmore" musical would do well in the real world, too.
"I don’t think it’s a terrible idea," she said, "The show always did have a theatrical feeling to me. It always did feel more like a play. And (Sherman-Palladino's) precision with language and really wanting every word as written, you would no more change a word of hers than you would the word of a playwright’s." (The producer is currently working on Amazon's "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.")
Graham has a background in musical theater, and was happy to stretch her talents on "Zoey's," where she plays the title character's boss at a tech startup.
"I just lend myself to that style, that sort of slightly more theatrical quality, this felt like a really nice fit," she said. "I just thought, I get to sing and dance, and I’m not playing a single mom."
